AI reshaped your workday: 7 things you should know

From the latest Microsoft study

Friday, smooth AI operator! Let’s close the workweek with insider knowledge:

1. 'Shadow AI' is RADICALLY changing the workplace.

With or without your company's approval. 7 things you should know, to get paid more or keep your job in 2024.

Based on the latest combined report from LinkedIn & Microsoft. They surveyed 31,000 people across 31 countries. I went through it to give you the best insights.

Numbers are HUGE:

1. Don't fight the AI tide. 75% of knowledge workers use AI to get stuff done.

2. 66% of leaders WON'T hire without AI skills. This includes non-tech roles!

3. 'Shadow AI' is happening. 80% of employees in smaller companies use AI tools without official approval.

Employees are burnt out = AI looks appealing. 68% are struggling with workload. AI tools can ease the burden.

4. Companies are replacing jobs with AI. Are your skills future-proof?

(Check the customer service bot from Klarna as a case study.)

5. Leaders MUST invest in AI training.

Only 39% of companies provide AI training, and 45% invest in AI tools.

6. Tense situation

75% of knowledge workers use AI to save time and improve productivity.

However, 45% of employees fear AI may replace their jobs.

(leaders should proactively address these concerns in my opinion)

7. All generations leverage AI

From boomers (73%) to Gen Z (85%), employees across generations are embracing AI in the workplace.

2. How AI is reshaping the workday (based on a Copilot study):

Microsoft researchers designed a six-month randomized control trial of 60 Copilot customers across industries. The study is the first mass-scale observation of 3,000 individuals using AI in their natural work environment with no interventions to encourage use.

Emails: Overall, Copilot users read 11% fewer individual emails and spent 4% less time interacting with them.

The customers who saw the most impact spent 25%45% less time reading emails.

Meetings: In some companies time spent in meetings increased, in others it decreased.

One hypothesis is that AI makes meetings more valuable, as stores of information and a shortcut to creation, like a brainstorming meeting, easily turned into a first draft.

For some companies, the increased efficiency leads to fewer meetings, and at others the increased value leads to more.

Documents: Overall, Copilot users edited 10% more documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The companies that saw the largest impact noticed a 20% increase. This may suggest that people are repurposing the time they save for high-value focus work like creating and consuming information.

Overall this report changed my perspective on AI in the workplace to be honest…

AI is NOT for the 1% anymore, and it feels the same like knowing English and Excel in 2015: VITAL for our career.
